University of British Columbia
This copy has an adventurous previous owner: between 1886 and 1959 it was the property of Antarctic explorer Apsley Cherry Garrard, the youngest member of the disastrous Terra Nova expedition led by Robert Falcon Scott from 1910-1913. The Folio is equally well-travelled, having gone on to find a home in Japan and the US before arriving at UBC as the result of funding from generous consortium of donors: it is only the second copy in Canada. The first state of Shakespeare's portrait from the title page has no shadow on the collar; the second state (found in this issue of the First Folio edition) has a shadow. The book is bound in full red morocco gilt by Staggemeier & Welcher [circa 1800]. There are multiple errors in pagination and multiple new paginations.
